Support Groups for Autistic Adults
(All support groups are inclusive of those with adhd)
Autism is not a disease. It is not a mental health condition. And it is definitely not a personality disorder. It is a lifelong condition, one of many neurobiological types that exist within the natural variation of human biology.
There are genes within the cells of the Autistic body which can cause characteristics that are specific to our neurotype. Some of those characteristics are digestive challenges, heightened sensory perception, hormone fluctuations or imbalances, varied muscular functioning, chronic pain, heart and blood pressure variances, and extreme social sensitivities. Many humans with ADHD also have this same biology.
Have you ever considered that, if our culture were created by and for humans with the Autistic neurotype, as a collective we might not experience chronic digestive, sensory, relational, or social sensitivities. Our culture might function in a way that automatically supports our muscular, hormonal, and cardiovascular composition. We might otherwise be considered neurotypical and live lives that are not rife with challenge.
And yes, we have biology in common, but we have to remember, as the saying goes, “If you’ve met one Autistic person, you’ve met ONE Autistic person,” that we are also individuals with different experiences and support needs. Due to intersecting experiences of oppression which are based on our various identities, or things we cannot change about ourselves, we all will experience Ableism differently. And because we are each unique in our experiences of Autism, it is important to feel seen and validated for our individual challenges.
These support groups provide you with just that, a place to share your experience of being Autistic in our current culture, a culture that was built for and by people of a particular neurotype that dominates every aspect of our culture.
You are invited to join our collective to get and give necessary support for our Autistic kin to thrive more easily in our world. Here is what you can expect from your participation in these support groups:
